Veganuary 2020

By Jan Sparrow

I’ve been a vegetarian since I was a small child and discovered where meat came from, and a vegan for much of that time due to my dislike of dairy farming methods. It was difficult dealing with other people’s reactions in the early years, but nowadays it’s a mainstream lifestyle choice and tasty vegan food is served in most pubs, cafes and restaurants. For home cooking we are spoilt by the variety of ingredients and treats available from many outlets including all the big supermarket chains.

Have you toyed with the idea of going vegan but didn’t want to feel different, and didn’t know where or how to start? Why not bite the bullet this month? Better still, get a group of friends to do Veganuary with you. Together you can make a real difference. Then if you want to continue after January, go ahead! Even just cutting back on animal products helps. It improves your health, your peace of mind and the planet too.  Go to uk.veganuary.com and their official partner vegansociety.com, for advice, recipes and support

Here’s what they say about it:

“Veganuary is a non-profit organisation that encourages people worldwide to try vegan for January and beyond. During the 2019 campaign, more than a quarter of a million people took our pledge to try a vegan diet, while more than 500 brands, restaurants and supermarkets promoted the campaign, and launched more than 200 new vegan products and menus in the UK market alone.

Since 2014, Veganuary has inspired and supported more than half a million people in 178 countries to try vegan for January – and beyond. We have worked with businesses to drive up vegan food provision in shops and restaurants and have made veganism more visible and accessible through our work with national and international media.

Our vision is simple; we want a world without animal farms and slaughterhouses. A world where food production does not decimate forests, pollute rivers and oceans, exacerbate climate change, and drive wild animal populations to extinction. A vegan world.

Our mission is to inspire and support people to try vegan, drive corporate change, and create a global mass movement championing compassionate food choices, with the aim of ending animal farming, protecting the planet, and improving human health.

Throughout the year, Veganuary encourages and supports people and businesses alike to move to a plant-based diet as a way of protecting the environment, preventing animal suffering and improving the health of millions of people.”
