The Cotswolds has a thriving community of amateur string players and the Cirencester String Orchestra, re-named the Cirencester Eclectic String Band in 2015, has been meeting on Wednesday evenings in Watermoor Church Hall for over 20 years.
While a few people have been there since the very beginning, many others are new to the group. The plan has always been to accept everyone without audition, to play a wide variety of music from Bach to the Beatles (hence the Eclectic tag) and to have fun.
Some of us learned instruments at school, got busy with work and family life and then came back to music as older adults. Some of us never stopped and just like the opportunity to get together and play on a regular basis.
We play anywhere that will have us in and around the Cotswolds. We’re looking to do more as we come out of COVID and we’re really keen to hear from violinists, viola players, cellists and double bass players – particularly the bass players. It’s hard to play jazz or tangos without a bass!
We have a fantastic professional Director of Music, Nicky Akeroyd, who selects the music, coaches and conducts. Every rehearsal includes a break for coffee and a catch-up and many of our concerts also involve food of some description – we know our audience, and our members!
This year we plan to hold a summer concert at the Watermoor Hall in which we will play extracts from Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, Mozart Divertimenti and ‘Wouldn’t it be Luverly’ from My Fair Lady.
