StarBistro, National Star’s popular social enterprise, is welcoming back the public.
Based at National Star’s Ullenwood campus, StarBistro reopened after being closed to the public due to the pandemic.
“It’s wonderful to be able to welcome back the public. That interaction with serving people who are not part of National Star is hugely important in developing students’ confidence and employability skills,” said Pete Johnson, Head of commercial and social enterprise at National Star.
The bistro is open from 9am – 4pm, Monday to Friday. Dishes on the menu will include soup, sandwiches, pasta, fish cakes and of course homemade cake.
“Our goal is to focus on menus and food that students can prepare and serve here but also dishes that they could prepare at home,” said Pete.
“Cooking is an important life skill. You need literacy skills to read the recipe and maths skills to measure out ingredients. You also need to understand nutrition so that you can make healthy eating choices beyond college.”
Chef Rob Skerritt is thrilled to involve students with the growing, preparation and serving of food. During term time, students grow a wide variety of herbs, salad crops and other vegetables which are used at StarBistro.
“We would love to be able to say all our salads that we serve in StarBistro are grown on site by students,” said Rob. “Not only would that be a huge support for sustainability but would provide the students involved with a huge sense of achievement.”
