Lovers of cinema will be pleased to know that Barn Cinema is back with the first screenings of 2023. Seven recent – soon to be classic – films are coming to Cirencester so there is no need to travel far, just make sure you book your seat before they sell out.
February 5th: Minions 2pm; The Rise of Gru and Everything, Everywhere All at Once 6pm
February 12th: Living 3pm and 7pm
February 19th and February 26th: Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical 2pm and 3pm; and The Banshees of Inisherin 6pm and 7pm
March 6th: Mrs Harris Goes to Paris 2pm; and Elvis 6pm.
The award season is in full flow and there are already winners and losers. At the Golden Globes, Bill Nighy (Living) has lost out to Austin Butler (Elvis); Leslie Manville (Mrs Harris goes to Paris) and Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) have lost to the winning team of Michelle Keoh and Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere all at Once). However, these are all fine performances and simply to be nominated should be seen as reward in itself.
If there is a common theme running through these films, it might be that life is short and if you have a dream, you should just go for it. Do you want a designer dress? Then give all you’ve got and buy it. Do you want to leave a legacy like Mozart? Then compose a tune. Want a better life or better relationships – then draw them to you (even from parallel universes). These tales are inspirational, motivational, aspirational… and best appreciated where you have made the commitment to immerse yourself in the drama – that’s at the cinema not on your sofa.
There are two inspirational films for children too: Matilda overcomes bullying and Gru rises to be the world’s greatest supervillain. Aspiration comes in many guises!
If you want to be inspired, then The Barn beckons. The acting talents of Nighy, Manville and Gleeson are all first class and just as deserving of your custom as the others. Some performances sold out last year so you really should book your tickets now. Full details and times are at barntheatre.org.uk
