Films worth talking about
Back to the Barn in May are three great films. Everything Everywhere All At Once swept the Oscars and divided opinion with its breath-taking originality. As the rollercoaster ride of a woman jumping between alternative realities many have found it more enjoyable – and understandable – on a repeat watch; Will you? Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical played to packed and enthusiastic full houses so if you haven’t seen this tale of a spirited schoolgirl adapted from the stage production yet, don’t miss out this time around. Thirdly, Mrs Harris Goes to Paris enchanted a full house with its captivating drama of a widow falling in love with a stunning Dior dress; how she overcomes obstacles to get one is truly uplifting!
We also have two films that were Oscar winners. The Whale features a morbidly obese man reassessing his life and relationships. Brendan Foster beat off fierce competition to win the Oscar for Best Actor and his performance is truly astounding. Women Talking is set in an isolated religious community where women do not read or write. Sarah Polley won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay as the women discuss what to do following an attack, whilst asleep, on one of them: should they do nothing, stay and fight, or leave?
Finally we have Moonage Daydream, a film endorsed by the Bowie Estate, telling through his own words and performances, aspects of his life in an immersive docudrama style. Cinematic, defying superlatives, this film will get you talking. So after this showing we are opening the bar so you can share your thoughts with friends or perhaps meet new cinema lovers.
