Barn Cinema Dec 23: Don´t have nightmares before Christmas!

Barn Cinema is showing the classic It’s a Wonderful Life this year for anyone who wants to celebrate Christmas early. Although the ending is uplifting, the hero George Bailey (James Stewart) is tested to the limit in harrowing scenes before his Guardian angel Clarence finally earns his wings (and a bell rings!). George is helped to feel content with his life, and finally feel festive with his family and friends around him.

His journey to self-discovery is quite a nightmare at times but nothing like the tortuous games the players in Saw X have to endure. This latest instalment of the visceral horror series is the best scripted and produced so far and follows cancer patient John Kramer (Tobin Bell) as he travels to Mexico in search of a risky and experimental cure only to find out it is a medical scam. He then exacts his revenge on the con artists, in ways that might keep you awake at night.

The Miracle Club, on the other hand, is a light-hearted drama about ladies from a hard knock community near Dublin who realise a dream. Laura Linney (Love Actually), Kathy Bates (Misery) and Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) never fail to delight as they escape from their hard lives on a journey to Lourdes, France. Expect some sharp dialog, a prescription of cheery wisdom and singing.

Jack Absolute Flies Again offers even more singing, more dancing and some rollicking laughs. This National Theatre Live screening has proved more popular in northern towns than southern ones – I don’t know why. Perhaps after seeing Caroline Quentin earning an Olivier nomination for best supporting actress you will be able to say why.

Enjoy your Christmas. Don’t have nightmares. Barn Cinema will be back in the New Year with some BAFTA award contenders.
