Six superb tales from great writers are on screen locally this July.

We have the live action update of The Little Mermaid originally by Hans Christian Anderson, one of the greatest storytellers of all time. Also there’s Are You there God? It’s me Margaret acoming-of-age comedy based on the book by Judy Blume that has started many mother-daughter conversations over the years.
Air is the true tale of how Sonny (Matt Damon) persuaded Michael Jordan to advertise a sports shoe. Audiences and critics have raved about this well-told human interest story set in the business world. Or, for those wanting an unexpected romance set on the Irish coast between a retired sea captain and his housekeeper come to My Sailor, My Love; it’s far from plain sailing.
Jim Broadbent stars in The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry which is based on The Sunday Times bestselling book by Rachel Joyce and has been described as ‘the odyssey of a simple man, original, subtle and touching’.
Finally there’s Triangle of Sadness. Nominated at the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Original screenplay, this is a black comedy set on a cruise ship where the ways of the entitled few are parodied in ways that are sometimes difficult to watch.
For well-written tales come to the Barn on Sundays.
