The installation of Cirencester’s newest hare sculpture, commissioned by Cirencester Civic Society, took place on Friday 24th October with much merriment and awe!
Welcomed officially by Sarah Orr, Mayor of Cirencester and our own Town Crier, Cirencester’s newest hare is in the perfect place to say “hello” to everyone who lives, works or visits our fantastic town. The Civic Society was delighted to work with local artist Mike Smith who was able to translate a list of iconic buildings into such an amazing showcase for the town. When you are next passing through the market place, see how many images you can spot! And, if you want to know more about the history of the buildings, just join an afternoon walk with one of our Civic Society Town Guides (www.cirencestercivicsociety.org.uk)
We loved working with Mike who describes himself as a painter, photographer and musician – with the hurdy gurdy being his instrument of choice, saying this instrument “requires great concentration, attention to detail, and like my paintings, needs endless fine tuning and adjustment for perfect results.” Check out Mike Smith’s website for other examples of his work: www.mikesrealart.co.uk

We are also very grateful to Cirencester Town Council, CCDT (Cirencester Community Development Trust) and the Friends of Cirencester Hare Trail who have all been tremendous supporters of this project. Look out for even more hares on the trail as it relaunches next year.
It’s amazing to think that our hare emerged, like a chrysalis, from its wrapping to this fabulous piece of public art for all to enjoy!
