Summer Escapism at The Barn Cinema

August is usually quiet at the cinema, but there are a few blockbusters that you should see: F1 – The Movie does for Formula 1 what Top Gun – Maverick did for supersonic jets; Sinners updates the vampire genre with superb cinematography and a catchy soundtrack, and Thunderbolts* is a refreshing reboot from the Marvel Universe that has been a hit with critics and audiences.

Children and adults reliving their childhood will enjoy Karate Kid Legends (starring Jackie Chan!) or the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which has lost none of its charm. However, for fresh ideas, watch the animation Elio, proving Hollywood can still innovate as well as entertain.

The auteur Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest Hotel) brings us his latest ornate masterpiece, The Phoenician Scheme, starring a long list of A-listers, including Benicio Del Toro in a comedy crime caper with a scene-stealing nun.

If you like to discover great films that others have missed, then come to Vermiglio, an intriguing tale of a deserter during WW2 who arrives in a remote Italian village in the Alps and changes the lives of the family who take him in.

Finally, I can heartedly recommend Mr. Burton starring Toby Jones and Lesley Manville, which makes a welcome return, this time with subtitles to ensure you don’t miss a word. This Richard Burton origin story will please anyone who loves acting and the theatre and is ideal for a nostalgic afternoon treat.
