The Joys of Spring – Notes of Happiness

by Cressida Landless

The daffodils are out, the tulips are poking their spears above the ground and life is starting again.

Isn’t it great.  I love the way it happens year on year, regardless of politics, train strikes or NHS waiting lists, nature does its thing.

It amazes me that when the fields are flooded sometimes you see ducks taking advantage of the extra water around.  My worry always is that the grass will die or the crop will fade away in the waterlogged ground but that does not happen.  When the water disappears the crop of grass or wheat or something else, is still there, biding its time to grow again.

Wow, it’s amazing!

Nature is resilient.

I often take a leaf out of nature’s book and when things do not go as I would like and I feel that life is serving me a raw deal, I look back over the last few years and try to remember the things that went wrong.  I sometimes find it quite hard to think of anything.  Not because there was nothing but because my mind focuses on the things that were good and when I felt happy.

There are the big things that went wrong which I remember like divorce! But even remembering a big sad event, I don’t feel the same emotion as I did at the time.  On the other hand, when I remember big happy events I do recall the joy and fun that I had.

This brings to the conclusion that life is good.  That it works in cycles and there are good and bad times but the good times are much more powerful than the bad.

What does happen sometimes, though, is that you hang on to the difficult experiences, not through any sense of morbid wish, but simply because it has become comfortable for you.  It has become a habit.  It is what you think about and what you talk about.

Changing a habit takes a while and it takes some effort and willingness.  But if you would like to be happier, start to focus on what you have that brings you joy.  Every day look out for something that lifts your heart and little by little your sadness will go and one day you will wake up full of the joys of spring.

Life goes in cycles, just like the seasons and the natural world.  There are good times and bad times and that cannot be avoided.  But as I mentioned earlier, when you look back you will see that the bad times came to an end and were replaced by something a lot better.

When you are experiencing difficulties, you can believe that times will improve, because they will.  It is all part of the way we are, and how life is, it is a cycle of ups and downs, and it is important to focus on the ups and let the downs go.
