Barn Cinema April 24: A Bumper Crop of Great Films

This Easter we have screenings on both Sunday and Monday. Migration is our ‘family’ offering, from the studio that brought you Despicable Me and Minions. It’s a cartoon about a family of ducks going on holiday with lots of wholesome laughs that adults can enjoy too.

The Motive and the Cue is the latest release from National Theatre Live and features a recent performance from the West End. Sparks fly as Sir John Gielgud directs Richard Burton whilst preparing for a performance of Hamlet in 1964, with some assistance from Elizabeth Taylor.

The Holdovers was the film many people thought might win the Oscar for Best Picture this year. Set in Christmas 1970, this film is an absolute gem and has reminded some viewers of Dead Poets Society. Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are superb and have garnered awards throughout the awards season.

There is also great acting from the likes of Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) playing Elvis in Priscilla, and Andrew Scott (Vanya) in All of Us Strangers. Both films were highly praised by critics and are not to be missed. Both are also available to stream, but wouldn’t you rather see a good film in a licenced cinema and make a night of it?

Another contender for Best Film is Poor Things for which Emma Stone won the Oscar for Best Actress. Mesmerizing, peculiar, and wild Emma shines in her role that defies convention. Those three little words might also describe Bob Marley whose biopic One Love reaches us at the end of the month.

Dune Part 2 wasn’t released in time to be nominated for the Oscars but is wowing the critics now with its breath taking cinematography and stunning action sequences. It’s a film that deserves to be seen on the biggest screen available.

Rounding off our selection is Six Inches of Soil, a documentary telling the inspiring story of British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food, to heal the soil, benefit our health and provide for local communities. This will be followed by a Q&A. Prepare to be challenged and inspired in equal measure.
