Barn Cinema August 23: The Future is Nostalgia

Take your pick!

Research has shown that generating nostalgic feelings produces optimism. This month’s films conjure up the past, harking back to times that probably never were.

Former ‘Space Cadets’ will love Asteroid City, a play within a play set in 1955 from quirky film director Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel). Cameos are in abundance; count the stars!

As it is the school holidays we have an excuse to reshow his classic animation Fantastic Mr. Fox, based on the 1970 tale by Roald Dahl (Matilda). Likewise there’s The Super Mario Brothers Movie (video game 1983) and The Little Mermaid (original story 1837).

All generations will love Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, a sweet reminiscence of puberty and first love set in 1970. It’s been described as ‘near perfect’.

The backdrop for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the moon landings of 1969 with flashbacks to Nazi Germany. This is a first rate reminder of how good the first three films were with set pieces that are familiar but innovative. I’ve seen it twice.

If you don’t leave the cinema feeling nostalgic – and optimistic – these films will have failed.
