Barn Cinema July 24: Recognising Female Talent

National Theatre LIve: Present Laughter

Like Glastonbury this year, Barn Cinema has a lot of female headliners. Juliet Binoche (Chocolat) leads with The Taste of Things a delicious rustic tale where food is the language of love. This French film is subtitled, as is The Teachers’ Lounge with Leonie Benesch (The Crown). This is an Oscar-nominated German thriller about a teacher caught between her ideals and the school system that hasn’t had the attention it deserves.

In contrast, Anya Taylor-Joy with only 30 lines of dialogue in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has been a commercial crowd-pleaser. This post-apocalyptic adventure shows her abduction and adoption into The Biker Horde and is ‘full-throttle entertainment’. The same has been said of The Bikeriders which stars Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) as Cathy, a girl who falls for Benny (Aaron Butler) a free spirit, who wants him to give up the motorcycle club when things get more violent.

In Challengers, Zendaya plays a tennis protégé-turned-coach who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. This film aced the box office (No. 19 of 2024) but Inside Out 2 outplayed it and smashed into the number five position upon release. Kensington Tallman will be a name few recognise but she is the voice of Riley the animated teenager experiencing new emotions.

Finally, I offer Present Laughter, a reissue from National Theatre Live with its standout role for Andrew Scott (Fleabag). He won an Olivier for his performance as an actor whose life has spun out of control. However, many people forget that Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) also won an Olivier, and Sophie Thompson (Four Weddings and a Funeral) won a WhatsOnStage Award.  Like all the women this month their stand-out performances should not be overlooked.
