Barn Cinema June 24: Which Film Director Will You Love the Most?

Barn Cinema goes global this month with some must-see international features. Perfect Days is a meditation on the beauty of life from German Director Wim Wenders set in Tokyo. It follows a man who loves simplicity and shows some encounters that cause him to reflect.

Robot Dreams is from Spanish Director Pablo Berger and is without dialogue. It is a charming animation for all ages that explores the need for companionship and tackling isolation. Adults might find it ‘achingly bittersweet’.

Italian Matteo Garrone was moved to co-write and direct Io Capitano a Homeric odyssey about two Senegalese boys who dream of travelling to Europe. It is mesmerising and savage in equal measure tackling the issue of people-trafficking head-on.

The Zone of Interest is from Londoner Jonathan Glazer. It is an unforgettable film set in the home of Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Hoss and his wife Hedwig and their family. Life carries on as ‘normal’ despite a background of gunshots and screams coming from the concentration camp next door. Seeing this Oscar-winning film at a venue with good sound is a must.

Some of The Boys in the Boat is also set in Nazi Germany and was partly filmed at Waterhay Lake. George Clooney directed this stirring story of an underdog rowing team who beat the odds (and annoyed Hitler).

Dev Patel directs and stars in Monkey Man a violent revenge tale about an anonymous fighter who tackles corruption and the abuse of the poor and powerless. It did great business at the box office worldwide.

And I finish with The Fall Guy, a well-received blockbuster about a stuntman (Ryan Gosling, Barbie) and the Director he loves (Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer), which has lots of bangs and crashes. It’s not Barbenheimer, but it’s sure to entertain.
