Here’s “Barbie-Heimer” – on Saturday too!
The competition between Barbie and Oppenheimer in the media won’t have escaped your attention. The memes have been tacky at times but the movies themselves are brilliant and it’s great to welcome them to Cirencester from Saturday 2nd September.
Yes, you read that correctly, we have an extended break at Barn Theatre whilst some staff prepare for the next production and, rather than have an empty space, we have the opportunity to try out Saturday Screenings. And what superb films they are.
Oppenheimer from Director Christopher Nolan (Tenet) details the trial of ‘the father of the atomic bomb’ for his links to communists. Despite being 3 hours long it never fails to grip your attention from start to finish.
Barbie from Director Greta Gerwig (Ladybird) is not a kid’s movie but ‘a feminist subversion of the system of patriarchy’. Indeed! Margot Robbie as Barbie has the lead role, but Ryan Gosling as Ken has the wittiest lines.
We also have Pixar’s Elemental. It’s an allegory with Ember, an oriental flame finding love with Wade, a westerner made of water. The message is a plea for tolerance and greater acceptance of immigrants.
We return to ‘Sundays only’ on September 24th with Disney’s animated classic Beauty and The Beast (1991), celebrating 100 years of Disney, and a repeat of Air starring Matt Damon as a Nike employee who persuades, perhaps the greatest athlete of all time, to endorse a sports shoe. Viola Davis is being tipped to win an Oscar for her portrayal of Michael Jordan’s mother. Don’t miss it.
Sat 2nd, Sun 10th, September: 12.30 pm Elemental, 3pm Oppenheimer, 7 pm Barbie. (The screening of Oppenheimer on September 2nd will have subtitles)
Sun 3rd, Sat 9th September: 12.30 pm Elemental (PG), 3 pm Barbie (12A), 6pm Oppenheimer (15)
Sun 24th September: 3 pm Beauty and the Beast 1991(U), 5 pm Air (15)
