The forgotten Queen of the Blues deserves to be remembered. The Barn’s Spring production is bringing the story of Ottilie Patterson to life: her outstanding voice, troubled life and musical legacy.
Often described as one of the finest Blues vocalists of her generation, Patterson rose to prominence in the late 1950s and 1960s as a featured singer with Chris Barber’s jazz band. Yet despite her immense talent and international acclaim, her name is not always given the recognition it deserves. This new play wants to change that.
At the heart of the production is a mesmerising performance by lead actress Jolene O’Hara, a Northern Irish singer (she performs regularly with Van Morrison) who captures both Ottilie’s powerhouse vocals and vulnerability.
From the smoky depths of blues standards to the tender ache of quieter ballads, her voice carries an emotional authenticity that transports the audience straight into the golden age of British jazz. It’s no surprise that she won Best Actress at the Northern Irish Theatre awards for her portrayal.
The reason Ottilie deserves so much more recognition is because of her impact on musical heritage. As a Northern Irish woman who achieved global success in a male-dominated jazz scene, she helped bridge American blues traditions with a growing European audience. She performed for President John F. Kennedy and influenced musicians from The Rolling Stones to The Carpenters.
By staging her story in such an intimate setting, the Barn creates a fitting tribute: raw, heartfelt, and deeply personal. Immerse yourself in the music and atmosphere of the post-war jazz scene and discover the legacy of this forgotten talent.
