The clocks have changed, the days are darker, and films about battling darkness in its many forms dominate this month’s picks.
We start with a midnight screening of Scream, the first in the slasher franchise now 30 years old, featuring masked killer Ghostface, and we end with Resident Evil, the film that sold more tickets than any other in September. If you like scary movies, these are the best; if you like seeing them at night, even better.
De Gaulle had many dark hours as leader of Free France, and his biopic with its spectacular battle scenes and a cinematic score was the biggest film in France this Summer. Scenes with Churchill are particularly memorable as they joust ideas in “Franglais”.
Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility pits sister against sister in courtship and marriage. Which will triumph: good sense or romanticism? Who has the most demure bonnet? Let battle commence.
Ghosts – The Possession of Button House returns with an eccentric cast of dead people fighting to stop their home becoming a hotel. Also returning is Shaun the Sheep – The Beast of Mossy Bottom, the latest from Aardman Animations. Which will children enjoy more?
The Heart of the Beast stars Brad Pitt and four ‘actors’ playing Onin, a war veteran dog with health issues. Their plane crashes in the stunning Alaskan wilderness, and they must escape the hostile terrain to survive. Expect raging rivers, savage wolves, sustained peril and a very brave canine pal.
Finally, we have the National Theatre’s revival of Clifford Odets’ Golden Boy starring Josh O Connor (The Crown). He plays Joe Bonaparte, a promising violinist in the Depression Era 30s who must join the brutal world of professional boxing and confront what he’s willing to sacrifice. According to the Sunday Times in its five-star review, O’Connor is ‘a knockout’. Another battling beast? See you at Barn Cinema to find out.
