Somewhere Else Writers (SEW) August 24 – Linda Dyson

Linda Dyson

Having lived in several different countries and consequently able to teach modern Greek and other languages, Linda has been writing since she wrote her first poem about hollyhocks at the age of seven. She began the opening chapters of a novel, aged nine, in an exercise book! She says she hasn’t stopped writing since, possibly because of her varied life, rather than despite it. You can read her poem; “Sunset in the Golden Valley” at Cirenscene.com, and will find even more from Linda and other members of the group at somewhere-else-writers.org

The group’s anthology: “Off the Wall by Somewhere Else Writers”  features stories and poems, and includes QR codes which link readers to audio recordings of them reading and talking about their writing. It’s one of the few books that actually talks to you. The anthology is available from Amazon at ÂŁ10.00 and is perfect for dipping into when travelling or as bedtime reading!

Sunset in the Golden Valley

Orange orb in silent splendour
Doffs its hat to dying day
Beyond the blackening hills,
While jittery swallows,
TrÄ—s bavardes,
Observing all from wires hung high above the house,
Spot speckled blackbirds’ young,
Lumbering awkwardly amongst the shadows,
Expectantly to seize a wandering worm,
And orange blossom heaves its heavenly scent
From some internal reservoir
To entrance us.
Solemn hollyhocks stand scarlet sentinel
Beside the gate
While woodpeckers cease their long, industrious knocking.
Briefly a bat above us dances in the gloom
And far below lone fox barks hollow
To serenade the night watch
Of the burgeoning moon,
And all is well.

Trės bavardes – very talkative
