‘Real’ men on screen
In June Barn Cinema brings you some artistic and commercial hits about men with real problems.
Creed lll is a fresh start for the Rocky franchise that has scored highly with critics and audiences. A righteous family man faces up to an ex-con from his past in a story reminiscent of Shakespeare, more about the nature of conflict than fighting.
Similarly John Wick Chapter 4 obtained huge critical scores and shouldn’t be discounted as just senseless videogame violence. The avenging hero (Keanu Reeves) kills 140 foes in as many minutes but, at times, it is almost like a ballet; but one with flying fists and bullets.
Aftersun is a complete contrast. This low-budget arthouse movie is a childhood memory, sometimes using a handheld camera, of a holiday taken with a sensitive father; Growing up is tough for both of them. Paul Mescal’s understated performance earned him an Oscar nomination.
Tom Hanks wasn’t nominated for A Man Called Otto but should have been, for showing a far more common side of manliness, as the ‘grumpiest man in America’. Described as a life-affirming, joyous comedy by some, this film is also available for the hard of hearing.
But we start with the highest grossing film of the year so far, The Super Mario Bros Movie; an animated tale of stereotypical plumbers in a world of talking mushrooms; Yes, ‘Unreal’ men!
