Barn Cinema Dec 25: Oscar Buzz, conspiracy theories and muppets!

Streamers like Netflix have changed how films are seen, offering immediate home viewing and seldom a cinema release. However, experiencing them in immersive Dolby sound, with a big-screen atmosphere and a room of fellow film lovers, is what the director really intends, so please come to The Barn for three ‘exclusives’ that are generating ‘Oscar Buzz’.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is a serious contender for Best Picture, a visual feast with a profound exploration of parenthood and rejection; Train Dreams also has stunning cinematography and deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. It is also being tipped for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside Wake Up Dead Man: a Knives Out Mystery starring Daniel Craig and Stroud actor Josh O’Connell, which is every bit as good as the others in the franchise.

Emma Stone is tipped to win a Best Actress Award for the bonkers Bugonia (it’s about conspiracy theories). Ariana Grande might win Best Supporting Actress for Wicked For Good, and Sean Penn puts in an Oscar-deserving performance in One Battle After Another. All these titles may also be nominated for Best Picture, but we won’t know until January. The acting in Springsteen biopic, Deliver Me From Nowhere, has also been commended.

Ralph Fiennes shines in Alan Bennett’s popular period drama The Choral with Simon Russell Beale as Elgar. Imelda Staunton returns with her real-life daughter Bessie Carter in George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs Warren’s Profession, and Martin Freeman delivers a highly praised The Fifth Step, also from National Theatre Live. Maxine Peake and Peter Mullan excel in I Swear, the inspirational true story of someone with Tourette’s that is winning plaudits by word of mouth, and Michael Caine rounds out our list of British acting royalty playing Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol

Come and enjoy a great movie – and note our extra evening screenings too.
