Last month, we experimented by screening three highly praised Netflix titles, proving that films are far better in the immersive world of cinema. This continues with Jay Kelly, where George Clooney plays a movie star who smoulders a lot and even makes a coffee in one scene; Clooney to the max! George is competing with Ethan Hawke for a Golden Globe in Blue Moon, where Ethan is barely recognisable as Lorenz Hart, coping with alcoholism following his split with Oscar Hammerstein. Surprisingly, Russell Crowe was not nominated alongside them for his towering performance as Hermann Göring on trial in Nuremberg.
Also award-tipped is the sequel to Zootropolis, an animated comedy, back after 10 years and well worth the wait. Rounding up the award nominees is It Was Just An Accident, ‘a defiant rebuke of authoritarianism that still delivers the entertainment value of a gripping thriller’ from Iranian director Jafar Panahi.
Convention is challenged by the National Theatre in Hamlet, with a black lead and an actress with dwarfism. Attitudes to Tourette’s syndrome are challenged in I Swear (with subtitles), a must-see inspirational true story, making its return to The Barn. More challenging still is Pillion, “this year’s biggest cinematic surprise”, described as a Dom-Rom-Com by its lead; it’s a love story between a dominant biker and his consenting ‘sub’. However, if you prefer your Rom-Coms more conventional, then catch the story of a woman who dies and must choose which of her husbands to spend Eternity with.
Finally, we are experimenting with Exhibition on Screen: Caravaggio, exploring his life, artistry, and mysteries through first-hand testimonies, expert insights, and revealing the man behind the brush.
