Cirencester Pantry Opens Wait List

Local food waste community group have space to welcome new members.

The Pantry, which meets every Friday afternoon, is a membership-based group whose purpose is to divert perfectly good food that is destined for landfill to the members for use in their household. They obtain food from national food charity Fareshare, local supermarkets including Marks & Spencers, Tesco, Aldi & Lidl, as well as local greengrocer Market Garden.

Currently catering for 60 households at a time the group are opening their waiting list to other locals wanting to make a sustainable impact.

Since its inception over a year ago, Cirencester Pantry has saved over 15 tonnes of surplus food from being wasted. This impressive feat translates to a reduction of 48.6 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, a significant contribution to combating climate change. The greenhouse gas emissions saved over the first year are equivalent to removing 29 average cars from the road for an entire year. Such strides towards sustainability demonstrate the tangible difference local initiatives can make in the global fight against climate change.

During the weekly meetings there is always a cup of tea or coffee with biscuits available and lots of new friends to chat to.  This sense of community continues outside the group with a member-only Facebook group to share triumphs, thoughts & recipes. All Pantry members are required to offer to volunteer occasionally for a number of roles – setting up, serving, pick-ups, clean-up – which further strengthens the sense of a shared enterprise.

There is no means testing to joining the Cirencester Pantry, it is a diverse group which welcomes everyone to join together against food waste. Simply register your interest by filling in the form available here – https://forms.gle/MJ25qy2e88Uoup5YA – and Cirencester Pantry will be in touch soon!
