Cirencester Town Council is consulting on its budget estimates for 2023-24; in 2022 the council tax was increased significantly to fund various projects such as the town centre improvements, refurbishing the Abbey Grounds toilets, and providing new play equipment in Chesterton – these projects are on track to be delivered by the Spring of 2023.
In light of the financial challenges many people are facing at this difficult time we are committed to keeping our fees and charges at the same level as last year and propose to not increase our portion of the council tax in 2023-24. The proposed 2023-24 Council Tax for a Band D household will be held at the same level as 2022-23 and is just £14.14 per month, which will deliver £1.2 million in service delivery for Cirencester, generating an income of £204k. However, due to a wide range of increases outside of our direct control, the budget estimates for 2023-24 do not account for any major capital projects and we will only be able to deliver minor improvements across Cirencester’s open spaces and facilities.
Not increasing the council tax is a proposal and subject to awaiting confirmation from Cotswold District Council on the tax base figures used to calculate the council tax. A decision will be made by the Council, following public consultation, at the end of January.
Whilst our team of dedicated staff provide a high level of service, we believe that we can, and should, be more visible and accessible to the public, that is why a key priority for 2023-24 will be improving the public realm and street cleaning and providing park rangers in our open spaces to deter anti-social behaviour and improve customer service.
The Town Council receives no financial support from central Government, Cotswold District Council or Gloucestershire County Council; we are also limited in the type of grants we can apply for.
