Do you remember Barbenheimer, when a Mattel doll battled Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer for box office gold? This September, Cirencester has what some call ‘Spidyssey’ – as this year’s biggest-selling movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, reaches us on the same day as Nolan’s latest masterpiece, The Odyssey. Both are “pure cinema” and “must-watch” tickets. However, spare a thought for Peter Mullan, Scotland’s finest actor, appearing the same day in The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford. Made on a shoestring budget, can Mullan’s nuanced, emotionally charged performance compete for an audience? We hope so.
The following week, Homer’s epic tale and Peter Parker’s present plucky picture return, and although both have superb fight scenes, we thought we’d show The Furious as well. This film has been called the finest action movie of the decade, with some of the best martial arts battles you will ever see. Come and be amazed.
Sibling rivalry is a common theme in Greek and Roman myths; In modern times, we have Oasis. A documentary called Don’t Look Back in Anger records the Gallagher Brothers’ return to the stage after decades squabbling in the press. Will it be the best doc we have? Perhaps, but Exhibition on Screen: James McNeill Whistler, signposting a retrospective at Tate Britain, promises to be excellent as well. We also have The People’s Emergency Briefing, a lively summary of a Westminster briefing made to politicians and other influencers sharing new facts about the climate crisis, introduced by Chris Packham. See all three and then decide which doc you think is best!
We also have three films that have been described as the best of their kind: The Voice of Hind Rajab, an Oscar-nominated, Gaza-set reconstruction of a Red Crescent attempt to save a trapped six-year-old girl; The Invite, named ‘the adult comedy of the year’ by the New York Post; and Obsession, the impressive horror debut from 20-year-old director Curry Barker. If you didn’t catch one the first time around, don’t miss this last chance to experience a masterpiece in the immersive world of a cinema.
Finally, filmed at the Lyttleton Theatre, The Misanthrope, starring Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) and Paul Chahidi (This Country), is a “must-watch” ticket. Like most of the films this month, there’s a conflict theme, this time with the titular character challenging concepts of kindness and respect and making herself unpopular in the process.
