Keeping you in touch with who is doing what, where and when
Welcome ‘mazing May!
I can’t believe how much is going on around Cirencester during the month of May – and that is without the distraction of two Bank Holidays and the VE Day celebrations!
The sun is out (fingers crossed) so let’s start with keeping fit in the outdoors – as well as ‘doing your bit’ for the community. Hands up who likes a stroll around the amphitheatre? Help keep it tidy by joining the AQIVA Meet Up on Tuesday 6th May (5pm – 7pm). Bring your own border forks, spades, hoes, secateurs, trowels, hand forks etc if you can, or just turn up at the Obelisk. Contact Alison Horrocks on 07856 449109 for information.
Or why not have a swim in the great outdoors? Cirencester’s open-air swimming pool will open its doors on Saturday 11th May – and its still not too late to donate any spare plants to spruce up those gorgeous flower boxes! Check out www.cirenopenair.org.uk
And talking of plants … ever noticed those simply amazing flower tubs springing up all over the town? Did you know that they (all 60 of them) are looked after by a team of volunteers known as the Phoenix Gardeners. Show your support and pop along to their Plant Sale on Saturday 24th May, 9am – 12noon on the Market Place, Cirencester to raise money to keep our town looking so fabulous. Call 01285 657696 or email: phoenixgardeners@gmail.com for details.
Entertainment also beckons this month, especially when enjoying an outdoor theatre experience is the perfect way to spend an early summer’s evening. Cirencester Theatre Company is performing ‘Love on Tap’ in the beautiful courtyard of the Corinium Ales brewery, The Old Stables Cirencester – and don’t worry about the weather as a cosy indoor tap room awaits if heavy rain makes an appearance! Performances on Thursday 15th May, Saturday 17th May, Sunday 18th May. For more information visit www.cirencestertheatrecompany.co.uk
Check out Cirencester Civic Society’s Monthly Talk on Monday 19th May about the Waterways of Cirencester. Dr Mike Jones will be exploring some of the issues around local conservation and management of the Churn as well as looking at the river system of the upper Thames. Meeting at Ashcroft Hall, Cirencester; doors open 7pm, talk begins at 7.30 pm. www.cirencestercivicsociety.org.uk
Just space for two more events to squeeze in … Saturday 10th May, 7-9pm, join the Austentatious: Dances from Regency TV workshop organised by Corinium Museum, helping you learn the difference between the Quadrille and the Cotillion and take to the floor like a Regency rake or heroine. http://www.coriniummuseum.org

And, if sculpture is ‘your bag’ turn up to Cirencester Baptist Church on Wednesday 28th May for the Arts Society Corinium lecture about Modern British Sculpture: Moore, Hepworth, Caro, Frink and others. Doors open 6.30pm. www.theartssocietycorinium.org
Well, that’s all for this month but do keep in touch (email me: caroleboydell@gmail.com or call 07776 144033) and let me know if you are planning a great event over the next few months – and watch this space!
