Open Garden at Down Ampney House

Down Ampney, Cirencester, GL7 5QW

5/6th and 12/13th July 10-4pm

The grounds and gardens at Down Ampney House have evolved and flourished for many centuries to reflect garden design of that era as well as the preferences of each owner.

The new custodians of this Grade I listed house working with skilled gardeners have a vision to revitalise the gardens, the work of which is well underway.

The Victorian walled garden is situated to the left of the drive and borders the church graveyard. It is filled with hundreds of colourful, scented shrubs, climbers and flowers. The swimming pool and pool house sit neatly at one end. The numerous flower beds and borders are filled with traditional country house flowers, roses and herbs.

The early 19 th century potting shed has been recently restored and the greenhouse tidied ready to store frost-tender plants in winter. All Saints’ Church spire looks most picturesque when it’s framed by pastel-coloured foxgloves and roses in early summer.

Of particular interest is the competition-quality croquet lawn; the woodland, which is currently being planted out with bluebells, ferns and rhododendrons; the reflection pool; tennis court; and numerous rare trees.

The gardens at Down Ampney House were last opened in 2006 but will be open from 10am to 4.00pm on the weekends of 5th / 6th and 12th / 13th of July, plus a special “twilight” evening on the 6th from 6.00pm to 8.00pm for a guided tour of the gardens including wine and cheese.
