The Barn Bus is a volunteer-supported community transport programme, connecting older residents from rural Cotswold villages to live theatre, to reduce isolation, improve wellbeing and strengthen connection.
It will provide safe, accessible transport from local rural areas to the theatre, enabling older residents to attend live performances as part of an organised supported group.
For older people, ageing in a rural setting brings progressive isolation, many stop driving due to ill health and lack of confidence, consequently losing independence and access to everyday social life.

With local coach company, Ellison’s of Ashton Keynes, the Barn aim to address the chronic issue of transport and help deliver a long-term solution to the massive social challenge faced by older people in the Cotswolds, using the benefits of live theatre to improve wellbeing.
There are so many health benefits associated with this initiative. Engagement with arts and culture stimulates memory, creativity, and emotional expression. Regular attendance is linked to slower rates of cognitive decline, particularly in memory and attention.
Arts participation increases life satisfaction and reduces anxiety across older populations. Attending theatre creates a shared emotional experience, reinforcing empathy and belonging.
Shared cultural experiences foster friendships, strengthen community bonds, and reduce feelings of invisibility, and group activities combat the “shrinking world” effect where older people restrict their social contact.
We need to raise £20,000 to keep the Barn Bus running this year and we are using Crowdfund Cotswold to evidence community support for this project.
