The Royal Opera Live

Damiano Michieletto’s sizzling new production evokes all the passion and heat of Bizet’s score, which features Carmen’s sultry Habanera and the rousing Toreador song. Antonello Manacorda conducts an exciting international cast, with Aigul Akhmetshina performing the title role.

Walking the Past
Town Walk
Thurs 9 May, 11am – 12.15pm

Join us for a tour of Cirencester with the Museum’s photographic collection as a guide.  We will take you on a short walk around the town to see the changing face of the high street and its surrounds. The church and hotels may stay the same but businesses come and go. we will encourage you to stand where photographers of the past once stood to see Cirencester then and now.

Walk lasts just over an hour. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a rain coat! Meet at the museum.

Cost: £10 adults, £9 members

Conquerors or Conquered? The Bathgate Roman Cemetery
Evening Lecture with Susanna Venn
Thurs 9 May, 7 – 8.30pm

Cirencester Excavations Committee excavated what became known as the Bathgate Cemetery in the 1970s. Over 400 Roman individuals were excavated and examined by Calvin Wells, giving an insight into Roman life in Corinium.

40 years later some of these remains have been re-examined, and considering other research on Roman Britain the story of the people of Roman Corinium may be set to change. The Bathgate assemblage contains a range of pathology, trauma and osteological anomalies which makes them an intriguing population, giving a new insight into the lives of Roman Corinium.

Walking Roman Cirencester
Cotswold Heritage Walk with Dr Alison Grierson-Brookes
Fri 10 May, 10:15am – 1:30pm 

Corinium Museum, in collaboration with Cotswold Heritage Walks, is excited to offer a series of historic walking tours. The event will be led by archaeologist, Dr Alison Grierson-Brookes, former Head of Collections at Corinium Museum, who has begun a new venture combining her two great passions archaeology and walking!

Head out with Alison to explore what lies beneath your feet revealing the ancient town of Roman Corinium, parts of the wall and impressive amphitheatre. After a short break for refreshments, Alison will lead a tour of Corinium Museum to discover the treasures revealed on the walk. With each step you will connect with the historic landscape and gain a unique insight as you walk and talk along the way. With 20 years’ experience researching and curating the collection you will be in expert hands as Alison shares her passion and unique knowledge of Roman Corinium.

This half-day event will comprise of a two-hour leisurely walking tour of the town and amphitheatre, entry to the Museum with refreshments, followed by a guided tour of the award-winning Roman galleries.

Wear good footwear as mostly flat but some uneven terrain. Walk experience lasts approx. 2 hours, museum visit lasts approx. 1 hour.

Get crafty at our family drop-in sessions and come away with a unique piece of art inspired by the museum. It is a great way to stimulate creativity and imagination, while learning a little about history. Activities may vary, but most will include colouring, cutting and sticking. All materials will be provided, as well as guidance and help if needed. No need to pre-book, just arrive between 11am and 12pm and pay for the session when you buy your entry ticket.

Roman Soldier Peg Doll
Children’s Workshop
Tue 28 May, 10.30am – 12pm

March into the museum and soldier out with your own Roman legionnaire!  This directed activity will allow your child the creativity to design their own implements, and learn a bit about Cirencester’s Roman military. We start with a traditional dolly peg as a base and build up the soldier and his kit from there.

Mini Mosaic
Children’s Workshop
Wed 29 May, 10.30-12pm

Join us for a morning of mosaic making. We will explore the museum looking for inspiration from the museum’s Roman mosaic collections. During this workshop you will create a mosaic tile to take home using colourful, safe glass tiles. All materials and instruction provided.

Discover @ The Stores

The Resource Centre, The Old Prison Site, Northleach

Join us to discover the museum stores: the Cotswolds from prehistory to the 1950’s, through stone, costume, pottery, rural life and social history. We have scythes and hoovers, pottery from all ages and Roman mosaics, carved column plinths and stone coffins, medieval tiles and corbels, smocks and an ambassador’s sword. After a tour of the store we’ll focus on a few fascinating things that we’ve pulled out of their boxes or off their shelves. The store is full of surprises.

Location: The Resource Centre, The Old Prison Site, Northleach, GL54 3JH.

The Resource Centre is the green building to the right of the main Old Prison car park.

Bronze Age Beaker Pottery Workshop

Bringing history and creativity together you will get the chance to make your very own Bronze Age inspired pot!

People have been making pottery for thousands of years, and in this workshop you will learn what techniques ancient Bronze Age people used to decorate their distinctive beakers, and try your hand at making your very own vessel. After exploring the prehistory galleries for inspiration, get creative and decorate your pot with natural materials such as: sticks, string, and even your own fingernails! All materials are provided.
