Barn Cinema Nov 23: National Treasures & More…

National Treasures, the National Theatre Live and new things of beauty.

This November Barn Cinema continues to show blockbusters and well-acted dramas such as Oppenheimer but is reaching out to new audiences by showing an art-house film, and has entered into partnership with National Theatre Live.

The latest blockbuster is called The Creator, from Gareth Edwards, the director of Star Wars Rogue One. Set within a war between humans and robots with artificial intelligence, a former soldier finds the secret weapon; a robot in the form of a young child. The special effects don’t disappoint and the theme of AI domination couldn’t be any more contemporary.

National treasures Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson star one last time in The Great Escaper. This is the poignant true story of a WWII veteran who secretly leaves his care home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Our art-house film is The Nettle Dress:  After the death of his beloved wife, textile artist Allan Brown begins a seven-year endeavour to weave a hand-spun dress from stinging nettles foraged in the woods surrounding his home. Critics have praised the film’s lyrical sensitivity and fairy-tale-like quality in taking a source of pain, stripping it of its sting and repurposing it into a thing of beauty.

Last but by no means least, there’s Skylight from NT Live. Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy star in this Olivier award-winning performance of David Hare’s hard-hitting tale of love, passion and ideology, directed by Stephen Daldry. This was filmed at the Wyndham Theatre in the West End and is one of the best performing NT Live titles of all time.
