Barn Cinema November to December 2024: Looking forward to great films and musicals

Barn Cinema is showing only one film during November – the Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire (1981), as the closing element of the Cirencester History Festival. This is on November 3rd at 7 pm. This is because cinema is only one of many ways that The Barn Charity uses the theatre space to raise funds to stage new performances. Please continue supporting Barn Cinema so it remains an important part of the fundraising plan.

In December you can look forward to seeing Blockbusters such as Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II and Paddington in Peru which need little introduction. There are ‘live’ musicals, and a concert captured for the screen and as usual, there is fine acting and production excellence, some of it destined to feature in the upcoming award season such as jaw-dropping horror The Substance with excellent make-up.

Sing Sing is almost certain to feature in the Best Actor category. Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group in a stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, with an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors. Pedro Almodovar’s bitter-sweet The Room Next Door starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore will also feature in many Best Picture and acting lists.

There are two unmissable WW2 dramas: Saoirse Ronan stars in Steve McQueen’s Blitz set during the London bombings and Kate Winslet stars in Lee as a war correspondent for Vogue magazine who took photographs of wounded soldiers, concentration camps and even Hitler’s Bathroom! Another period drama is The Critic starring the excellently foul Ian McKellan which I found highly entertaining.

The Wild Robot is predicted to win Best Animated Feature for Dreamworks at the Oscars and uses a hand-drawn Disney-like aesthetic. Its message that “Sometimes to survive we must become more than we were programmed to be” is destined to become a classic.

For music, we have ‘the King of Waltz’ Andre Rieu, and stage musicals Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera, all benefitting from the Barn’s wonderful Dolby Surround Sound. We also welcome a 4k reissue of White Christmas starring Bing Crosby to get you in the Christmas spirit. You are reminded that meals are available in the Teatro restaurant next door to share with relatives who can’t join you on the big day itself.

Chariots of Fire is on November 3rd at 7 pm.

By the time you read this, dates will be available on our website and will be listed in next month’s magazine. Barn Cinema looks forward to welcoming you back soon!
