We are still going but have shrunk massively as a group since the CTA’s heyday many years ago, but the intention is still the same -to create links between us and our partner towns in Germany and France.
We have upped our game this past couple of years mainly because of more dynamic new blood on the committee and have achieved a few more people going to Itzehoe and now the opportunity to welcome back a group from there this coming October.
We are hoping to be able to welcome a group of about 30 and are still looking for a few people to host who might hopefully then want to take part in exchanges or become involved generally with the CTA.
There is still a lot of liaising with the Town Council, and a local music group will be the entertainment before the civic dignitaries welcome one another and no doubt exchange small relevant gifts. To emphasise the community aspect of the group further we have this last year welcomed bids for a small amount of funding from the local schools and youth groups – to help pay for anything that enhances language learning or cultural awareness.
We were able to help the air cadets with funding to the war graves in France and Belgium and 2 primary schools with funding for a French play and then the junior council who are doing a project with groups from their schools on our twin towns under the guidance of Andrew Tubb.
Members of the CTA committee will attend many of the primary school activities which will take place in term 6. We are also hoping to raise our profile at the Big Lunch where we are setting up games of pétanque and simple language learning activities for children.
The Cirencester Calendar was a main fund raiser for us, but after 10 years of production it was decided we couldn’t continue with it. We have thus been looking at other fundraisers – to minimise costs for those involved in hosting primarily and one of these is the Bob King Magic Show.
I have seen Bob King myself twice at the ladies’ group I run. He is very talented himself; a former mayor and keen supporter of community participation so is happy to perform for us at a very reasonable rate.
