At last, it’s Awesome August!
Children off school, hosepipe bans, no escape in sight … EXCEPT there is a whole world out there in Cirencester to tempt you to try something new or rekindle a favourite past-time.
Let’s kick off with Street Food Sunday in the Market Place organised by Cirencester Town Council on the first Sunday of August and September. Check out FREE events during August including Bands in the Park every Sunday afternoon in Abbey Grounds as well as activities aimed at young people. www.cirencester.gov.uk
New Brewery Arts is holding an assortment of FREE family events to help get you in the mood for the Orpheus celebration with a Parade Puppet Making drop-in on Saturday 16th August and Wednesday 20th August, just in time for the opening of the Phoenix Festival. Plus, there is a Let’s Make Art FREE drop-in with a chance for children and their grown-up to get creative together. www.newbreweryarts.org.uk
A question for everyone … how well do you really know Cirencester? Why not join a FREE guided walk around the town led by Cirencester Civic Society to hear about our 2,000 year history from the Romans to the present day? During August, just turn up in front of the Parish Church in the Market Place, 2.30pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday or Sunday. www.cirencestercivicsociety.org.uk
Now, calling all photographers … whether you like to just snap what you fancy or you have your own way of styling a shot – Rotary Club of Cirencester would like to hear from you as they are running a competition called Historic Cirencester, a different perspective. There are three categories to choose from (under 16’s, 16 -18’s, and over 18’s age groups) with prizes awarded for winners, as well as the opportunity to be part of the pop-up exhibition at the Bingham Gallery on Dyer Street during Cirencester History Festival. Closing date is 15th August so get your skates on! www.cirencesterrotary.co.uk
And, another shout-out … this time for Cirencester Radio which is looking for a very special volunteer – one who is technically minded. When Corinium Talking News closed its doors, Cirencester Radio was approached to offer their Cirencester service to listeners who are visually impaired and, to do this, they need someone to volunteer just two hours every fortnight. And finally, I was delighted to attend The Arts Society Corinium Garden Party on Sunday 6th July to officially welcome local artist Laurie Plant as their new President. Hosted in the garden of the Chair of the Society, there was an exhibition of Laurie’s paintings to give people not familiar with his work an opportunity to see it. The photograph, below, shows the winner of a raffle prize receiving an original Laurie Plant painting of Venice. As well as holding fabulous events, Arts Society Corinium also offers talks, visits and tours. www.theartssocietycorinium.org
