Distractions: The Slow Art of Stamp Collage

Thu 7 August – Sun 7 September, Free

Rachel Markwick has been making collages using stamps for more than 25 years. Slow art is now a feature of art galleries, where one can take time to stand in front of a painting for longer than usual, to look at the fine detail, texture, colours and themes, often with the help of an audio guide. The “Slow” ethos also fits Rachel’s approach to sustainability, recycling and the need to take time to produce worthwhile products rather than throw away items, and to listen and look more intently. It can be a slow process, from inspiration, to finding the right stamps among the vast quantities amassed over many years and assembling the pictures.

When seeing Rachel’s artwork from a distance, it is not always obvious how it is made. It is only when examining close up that all the work and details can be appreciated. Even her more abstract and patchwork designs have stories to tell.
