We’re done with Dry January … let’s say “welcome” to Fabulous February! And what a month!
The Second Sex? Women in Italian Renaissance, Art & Society
Let’s start with a day out on Tuesday 18th February 10-3pm, exploring “The Second Sex? Women in Italian Renaissance, Art & Society” with Sarah Dunant, who was one of the expert commentators on the recent BBC docudrama, “Renaissance: The Blood and The Beauty”. This is organised by The Arts Society Corinium at The Baptist Church. Sarah will talk about the rich history of courtesans and nuns and look in focus at Isabella d’Este, patron, collector, fashion icon and political manipulator. Lunch will follow and then a discussion, where what the participants think, is as important as what the lecturer knows! Booking details from: www.theartssocietycorinium.org
CHURN Project Soup
Sadly, February weather is often wet and cold so it’s good news that the CHURN project is offering homemade soup at their Ageing Well groups. This programme offers older people the support they need to stay connected to their community, providing a range of services from groups as well as individual support such as befriending. CCSOC Design Award
How many times do you walk past a building and think how great it looks? Perhaps it is a house or office newly built or a conversion that incorporates a sustainable approach to design. The new year sees an appeal from Cirencester Civic Society for nominations for a Design Award for any building meeting the criteria of good practice so put on your thinking cap and take a look at www.ccsoc.org.uk for more information.
24 Hour Organathon Feb 28th-March 1st
Something else that might be fun to do – and it’s all for a good cause – is to sign up to support the 24 hour Organathon on February 28th/March 1st (10am to 10am). The Parish Church will be open for 24 hours of non-stop organ music to raise money for the future of music at the church. Organists from across the country will come to perform a range of music on the fantastic Willis/Harrison and Harrison organ. Free entry, but donations kindly requested! And just before this, on February 5th, Austrian organ sensation Lukas Hasler will perform a recital at St John Baptist at 19.00. Doors open at 18.15 with tickets on the door costing £10 for adults, £5 for students and children under 16 are free. It should be a great event!
Cirencester Community Awards
Lastly, don’t forget to nominate your community group, charity or club for a Cirencester Community Award. This year, there are five categories including two for individuals. So, if you or someone you know, is a helpful neighbour or fundraiser or just ‘goes the extra mile’, find out about entering the Cirencester Champion or Young Community Entrepreneur awards on www.CirencesterRadio.co.uk
