Imagining Corinium
Thu 2 April, 7pm-8pm
£9-£10
What do we know about the Iron Age Britons who lived in this landscape before the Romans arrived? For the Dobunni, the people of this region, the evidence is fragmentary: archaeology, coins and a few fleeting references in Roman histories. The rest, they say, is imagination.
Linda Proud, well-known author of historical fiction, explores how she brought this largely lost world to life. Although the hero of her Awen trilogy is Togidubnus, king of the Atrebates, she found herself repeatedly drawn to Dobunnic territory—particularly the ancient settlement at Bagendon, known as Kyronion.
Imagining Corinium – Corinium Museum
What might it have been like for the Dobunni as the Roman invasion threatened their culture, beliefs and way of life? In the end, when the sources fall silent, we can only imagine—and this talk invites you to do just that.
There will be two short readings, one set at The Ditches near Bagendon, the other at Seven Springs near Cheltenham, and opportunities for questions.
Biography
Linda Proud is an award-winning novelist best known for her quartet of books set in the Florentine Renaissance. Her first novel A Tabernacle for the Sun, was long-listed for the Booker Prize. In 2013 she turned her attention closer to home and began the Awen series set in first century Britain. She is a stickler for research and has consulted – and been guided by – many archaeologists and experts in the period. She lives in Oxford with her husband.

Emma Abel of Abelmosaics is an award-winning Maker of Wildlife Mosaics, largely self-taught and she has been mosaicing for over 25 years. Her focus is critically endangered species, raising awareness through exhibitions and competitions. Abelmosaics has won awards with the Explorers Against Extinction global Art initiative and The Wildlife Arts Society amongst others. Emma’s work is in print and she has exhibited at the Royal Geographical Society and Natural History Museum in London as well as venues around the UK.
