January Blues, Resolutions and Getting in Shape for 2026

Alex Ide PT

It’s no myth that January can fall across the spectrum of extreme highs and lows, whether you have burnt yourself out through Christmas or are looking at 2026 as the year it all starts.

I personally understand the January blues and both the momentum and overwhelming that can come from it, a few points I try to put across to my clients.

  • It’s okay to eat Christmas dinner – and pudding without guilt or fear of undoing hard work – even some festive drinks aren’t going to totally undo your hard work
  • Maintain activity – even if just for a 30 minute walk per day to clear the mind
  • If you are stressing yourself like crazy to get in the gym, and filled with guilt over missing a session then you may want to look into Working In, rather than Working out (meditations, tai chi, yoga, journals, deload your workouts (less intensity). Sometimes showing up for yourself in multiple ways is the biggest gift you can give – I always feel better even if the workout was not “perfect”.

It’s true this time of year can build a lot of expectations about 2026, so look into the future and think about what you would really like to get out of this year, and start implementing small steps to take you there. Whether losing a few pounds, moving with less restriction or pain, feeling more energised through your day, looking at your food intake and wondering if what you are eating is fuelling you or disrupting you.

Most people overestimate what they can do in a week and underestimate what they can do in a year, and therefore struggle to keep momentum up, it’s why the gyms are packed in January and people teeter off through February.

If you feel you could benefit from some structure for your year, or a progressive plan of action to be made regarding your health and fitness to keep you accountable and showing up for yourself – please Get In Touch.

Happy New Year to you all, I hope 2026 is everything you hope for!
