This month the retiring group chair person has written a contemporary haibun. This Japanese form combines a brief piece of prose with a haiku. The prose is usually simple, reflective, and focused on a moment, journey, or observation. The haiku at the end deepens or contrasts with the prose rather than merely repeating it.
Norman says “I capture fleeting thoughts and moments. This poem is about all of us and how we interact with art and music.”
He travels slowly to places that will inspire him. He started writing for his school magazine ‘The Retfordian’., then, when a student, he wrote short stories in The Irish Mountaineering Club Magazine. It was while working in Japan that he became fascinated by the haiku; the short intense poems still fill him with joy.

My partner’s much loved piano has recently arrived into the sitting room of my small eclectic flat. I’ve made room for the one hundred year old mahogany among my paintings, furniture and old books. I stand and listen with joyous anticipation to hear the beautiful music played on the heirloom.
