What’s On in The Telephone Box Gallery in Ashton Keynes.

Bees, Blooms, Birds and Baskets

Bees, Blooms, Birds and Baskets is a new exhibition that opens on July 20th. The exhibition showcases mosaics, prints, and baskets made by Kathryn Gray, a local community artist and also the gallery’s curator. Kathryn’s colourful mosaics use a joyful mix of materials – old plates, glass, ceramic household tiles, jewellery, as well as traditional mosaic tiles – to make a delightful collection of mosaic bees, birds and flowers.  She has recently rekindled her love of basketry and there are several coiled baskets in the exhibition, together with some linocut relief prints. Some of her work is for sale and ten percent of the sale price will be donated to two NGOs in Guatemala.

The iconic red telephone kiosk situated in the heart of Ashton Keynes was given a new lease of life in 2022 after the Parish Council bought it for £1 under the BT Adopt a Kiosk scheme. Prior to opening as a community gallery, a group of volunteers lovingly renovated it and since then it has hosted over 30 exhibitions, showcasing work by local artists, photographers, craftspeople, community groups, and schools.

Ashton Keynes is the first village on the Thames and many walkers on the Thames Parth National Trail often make a detour to the Village Shop and visit the gallery next-door, making it a popular attraction among tourists and the local community.  If you’re ever in Ashton Keynes, be sure to stop by The Telephone Gallery as with the exhibitions changing monthly, so there is always something new to see.
