For many locals, Barn Cinema is an unexplored place, known of but not yet experienced. If that includes you, let me tempt you with Underland. It’s a poetic film, written by Robert McFarlane, about life underground in a world of caves (and more!). Mystical and beautiful, you won’t see it anywhere else. It’s nice to do things differently.
For example, we have twists to the three top family films of the summer. The live-action remake of Moana is available as a sing-along; Toy Story 5 is available for the hard of hearing; and Minions and Monsters has a subtitled screening too, just because I’d love to know what these yellow fiends are saying! Wouldn’t you?
Baz Lurhman’s Elvis Presley in Concert is back if you want to follow up your trip to the Million Dollar Quartet. It’s possibly the best concert footage ever. Also, as we have some free boxsets of DVD’s and posters to give away, we are showing Glastonbury: The Movie – 30 Summers On. It showcases some great music, stunning images and a wonderful vibe; Mike Leigh (Nuts in May) has called it ‘a masterpiece.’
There’s a chilled jazz soundtrack to accompany the comeback of Dustin Hoffman in Tuner, a laidback crime caper. Also, some great pop in Power Ballad, the film being called ‘the feel-good hit of the year’. Check out the trailers on YouTube.
Night and Day sounds Cole Porter-related, but no, it’s based on the book by Virginia Woolf; its comedic moments are played to great effect by Jennifer Saunders and the cast.
Finally, may I commend The Stranger to you? It’s a French-language courtroom drama based on Albert Camus’s existential work, adored by critics. As screenings are rare, probably more people will travel from afar to see it than locals. In a way, that’s a pity, so please come and join them and see what you’re missing.
