Founded by Vicki Oliver in 2015, in an effort to halt the dramatic decline in the hedgehog population, Brockworth Hedgehog Rescue moved to its present premises in 2023.
The enlarged rescue has the capacity to care for over 100 injured and sick hogs with a separate treatment room where hedgehogs can be administered any medication that will support their recovery.
A team of over 30 volunteers care for the injured, poorly and orphaned hedgehogs that are admitted to the hospital on an almost daily basis.
The daily routine in the rescue involves cleaning out and replacing bedding, refreshing food and water and maintaining a high level of hygiene by disinfecting equipment and washing fleeces. All volunteers are encouraged to undertake the First Aid, Care and Rehabilitation course and for those who wish to broaden their role will receive in-house training on carrying out stool samples to establish what medication may be required, giving fluids to dehydrated hogs and administering medication when necessary.
Volunteers will care for hedgehogs that are admitted with a range of injuries from gardening tools (particularly strimmers) in the spring and summer and burns from bonfires that hadn’t been checked beforehand and high levels of parasites, all with the objective of releasing them back to the wild.
In addition to the volunteers caring for the hedgehogs in the hospital, there are also transport volunteers who collect injured or poorly hogs if the finder is unable to bring it to the rescue themselves.
Fundraising is also a key activity as it costs over £80,000 to keep the rescue operating and although we do receive a limited number of bequests and grants from local businesses the vast majority of income is generated by the various fundraising activities run by the volunteers themselves.
