There is currently a generous crop of good horror and science fiction films on the cinema circuit, and The Barn is pleased to bring you some of the best.
In Rose of Nevada, a mysterious boat returns to a Cornish village 30 years after it disappeared. This is currently reviewer Mark Kermode’s top film of the year, so don’t miss this rare chance to see it. On the other hand, Disclosure Day, the latest from Steven Spielberg, is everywhere, with everything you might expect from the director of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET and the Indiana Jones series. We are experimenting by showing it with an intermission and subtitles on the repeat, so do tell any seniors you know. Our trinity concludes with Hokum, which reminded one reviewer of The Shining, and is set in an Irish hotel, said to be haunted by a witch. Spooky.
We also have delightful dramas from two national treasures. Bill Nighy stars in 500 Miles, a tale of troubled brothers who set off to find their grandfather in Dingle. Expect stunning scenery and an unexpected twist. But more twisty (and more sparkly) is Sir Ian McKellen in The Christophers, as an ageing artist being mistreated by his children with a magnificent acting foil in Michaela Coel. The Baftas need to remember these performances.
Almost rounding out this month’s offering is National Theatre Live: Les Liaisons Dangereuses. With plenty of intrigue and sultry performances from Lesley Manville and Aiden Turner (aka Ross Poldark) this production cannot fail to impress. Reputations are at risk!
But we start with Our Land, a documentary about the right to roam and the age-old debate about power and privilege and the control of access to nature. Say no more…
