The Circle of Life -Should you Resist Change? – Cressida Landless, The Happiness Coach

I have recently been thinking about the cyclical nature of life.  Everything has its season and there is a natural way of renewal time and time again.  We call this the circle of life.

It is very tempting to resist change and try to keep things exactly as they are.  But the truth is that change is inevitable.  Nothing lasts forever and being able to welcome change as an exciting new chapter is a vital part of maintaining a happy outlook.

Even relationships can reach their natural end.  A divorce or end of a long-term relationship is very unsettling and can appear to be a disaster.  But it does not have to be.  If you look carefully at the relationship, perhaps you might see areas that were holding you back or making you unhappy.  Instead of feeling devastated by the loss of the relationship, give yourself time to grieve, because that is important in any loss and then try and look forward to a life that you can shape for yourself.

Once a relationship has ended there is often little that can be done to resurrect it.  Sometimes if both parties are willing to change, a new form of the old relationship can come into being.  But trying to hang on to something that does not work for either party promotes bitterness and hatred.

I speak from personal experience.  My marriage came to an end quite suddenly.  One minute I believed myself to be happily married and the next I was facing life on my own with my young children.  I spent a few months being very angry, which was great in a way but I came to a point when I realised that my friends were getting fed up with all my moaning.

I began to see that if the marriage had continued we would have made each other very unhappy.

I was being given a chance to live life on my own terms.  And I took this chance, made some changes to my thinking and set about creating a new happy ever after for myself. I realised I was in control of my own destiny and that felt good.

If you are facing a change at the moment of any sort, it is worth trying to recognise the positives within the change and know that the circle of life is just that, a repeat of opportunity and change to keep you moving forward in a way that enables you to learn, create and grow as a human being.
