Walks and Talks
Cirencester Wool Walk
Sat 1 Nov, 11am- 12:15pm
£9 – £10

“The finest and most expensive wool was the English which came from the Cotswolds and, in particular, from Northleach and the great Abbey lands of Cirencester” Francesco Datini, 15th Century Florentine merchant.

Five hundred years ago it was noted that ‘half the wealth of England rides on the back of sheep.’ Join Ian Thomas for a walk around Cirencester, where the hustle and bustle of the medieval town will be brought to life through the lives and skills of the wool combers, the card makers, the dyers, the weavers and the wool staplers. Ian will share the role the Abbey played in trading wool and he will highlight the growth of the great ‘wool’ church of St. John the Baptist. Ian will take you to the sites that bear testimony to Cirencester’s glorious wool history.

The walk lasts just over an hour. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a rain coat! Meet at the museum. Booking recommended as places are limited

Sarah White is a local Cirencester Artist and textile designer. She is inspired by the richness of
seasonal colours and shapes from the Cotswold landscape. Her paintings and studies concentrate on the effect of light falling on linear forms. The colours are layered and diffused using inks, dyes and pastels and she paints on velvet to create extra blended softness. Additional landscape studies are explored using collagraph techniques, either monochrome or tinted to build up textural layers.

Lise, the only daughter of Widow Simone, is in love with the young farmer Colas, but her mother has far more ambitious plans for her. 65 years after its premiere, The Royal Ballet presents Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée. This affectionate portrayal of village life combines exuberant good humour and brilliantly inventive choreography in what is undoubtedly Ashton’s love letter to the English countryside. La Fille mal gardée whisks us away into pastoral bliss with Ferdinand Hérold’s cheerful score and Osbert Lancaster’s colourful designs.
